JMO but valvoline 50wt racing oil is meant for watercooled engines ,not an air cooled V-Twin,and a multi viscosity oil such as 20-50 protects much better at cold start up where the heavier weight doesnt flow the same

Re: Engine Oil Poll

If the owners manual gives a grade of 20/50 why would you think it would be OK with 50 wt?

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Gee, I thought this was a poll to find out what we use. I didn't think I would get beat up about what I use. But seriously, you guys are all very knowlegable, and, I admit, I've learned alot about oil here, so I see the error of my ways. I did use a multiviscosity in past oil changes, (same brand) but must have had a brain freeze this year when it came time to purchase. And I never imagined all the other things I've learned here about oil. So I'll rectify this asap before we start serious riding for the season.

Nobody is beating you up about anything.
It's your bike and you are therefore entitled to run maple syrup in it if you wish. If you read the owners manual, it mentions the use of Rotella oil as a temporary substitute but it also mentions to change the oil at the first possible chance. It also gives you a guide about the weights for the expected temps to be running in.

Let your conscience be your guide here on what to run.

I called a couple of dealers today trying to decide where to have my bike Dynoed and posed the question about bringing in my own oil for the 1000 mile change. I told them both M1 V-Twin. One said no problem. The other started talking about the warranty and how Syn3 was spec for the bike. They also claim that dyno should take between 1.5 to 2 hours. I know where I'm not going! Thanks glider!

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Did you buy the bike new? It would be a good idea to rea the owner's manuel if you have one. It is very informative and covers all the basics on the bike.

Being that your bike isnt new I'm guessing you dont have an owners manual, check the download section of the forumhttp://www.hdtalking.com/downloads.php . The 3 hole eveyone refers to are engine oil, primary oil and transmission oil. I hope this helps
