Re: Engine Oil Poll

I went to a rice-burner shop for the Spectro. They had to order in the 75W140 6-speed stuff and the 85w chaincase, but they carried the brand. Got the Amsoil MCV 20w50 through a local Amsoil dealer for the engine based on the white paper. Fixin to swap out the M1 I have in all the cars to Amsoil too.

TQ

Got a question: I live in a small town and looked for, but could not find, some Mobil 20w-50 V Twin oil. I'm running a 99 RK with a 88cubic incher. Is there any reason for me not to use Mobil 15w-50 Extended Performance. Second question: Dumb I know, but does the motor and transmission run off the same oil? If not where would I drain and reinstall the oil for the trannie? thnx in advance for the info.

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Truthfully almost any oil will work but the V Twin had additives that are beneficial to an air cooled motor. Your choice here. I wouldn't use them.

You have 3 different compartments of oil in your bike unless it's a sportster.

Re: Engine Oil Poll

So check this out, I drained the Amsoil out for the regular service and popped on a new K&N then filled with 3.5 Mobil1 20/50. The engine noise from the top end almost doubles instantly between 2g3 and 3g rpm,,,,I had to ride to Lexington, about 100 miles north so let the HD mechanic listen to her while there. He indicated it seemed fine, and was normal in some twin cams to do that with one syn oil and not another. So like, where's my Amsoil,,,,

Re: Engine Oil Poll

I used Amsoil in all three holes because of the results I saw in this poll. I run a 99' RK Twin 88. The trans oil I drained was discolored, had a few metal particles, and it was hard to shift into neutral.

Was that before or after using the Amsoil?

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Around here (West coast of Florida) the local $tealers will NOT put any other brand except HD in a bike. They SELL Amsoil in the parts department because some customers want it, but the service dept. will not install it. No problem for do it yourselfers like me. They usually only have a few quarts on hand, so you have to ask them to order it, then wait, etc...a big pain. Mobil 1 at Autozone is SO much easier. As far as Spectro 6 speed, fa-get-about-it. They never heard of it, and won't put it in even if you brought in a quart. I had a Honda dealer order it for me. They were super nice about it. Got a case in a few days. Even gave me a discout on the price! I am set for quite a while now...unless my friends find out I have it! Naw, they all let the $tealer put syn3 in all 3 holes. Oh well, to each his own.
