Editorial Reviews
Product Description
At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

Customer Reviews:
Finally - it's here

I waited for the Kindle to be launched internationally for two years - when it finally became available I was one of the first to get it and am now using it every day, reading more books than before and loving it. Easy to hold, so much lighter than lugging the average 'real' book around in your bag, easy to use (out of the box), great support if you need it, super easy on the eyes, good selection of books available even in Germany. Sometimes the wireless connection takes a little long, but hey, this I can live with and I am sure it will improve over time. Well done, Kindle-team!
I don't care. I LOVE Kindle!

I've had my kindle for about two months. It was a birthday present to myself (I have few friends and receive few gifts from others). I have enjoyed subscribing to the New York Times and Time Magazine, and love the way that the items simply show up either daily or weekly for me to enjoy. I transport my children to lots of events and it's great to be able to grab the Kindle and have a whole Sunday New York Times to read at orchestra practice or swim practice. My son and I enjoy putting in advance orders for new things coming out (like Stephen King's "under the dome") and having them show up magically, like unexpected presents, when they're available. (We're a bunch of geeks, I know!) Recently, I went on a business trip and was able to purchase a new item to read when I finished my old book. It was also nice not to have to lug the unread books home in order to put them on my bookshelf. I have recently begun experimenting with the clippings feature and enjoy picking out snippets of editorials and the like from the NYT to share with my students when I teach. It's nice to just pull out the sleek Kindle, rather than shuffling around with piles of books in addition to my chalk dust covered self, when I go to class.
THINGS I DON"T LIKE: the odd placement of the back button on the Left hand side of the Kindle, the nonsturdiness of the small square button which toggles the cursor. My kids seem to think it should be a touch screen as well. Finally, I wish there was a way that if we purchased a family of kindles, then we could share subscriptions among them. Currently we all want to read the new TIme magazine at once and it's kind of annoying if I simultaneously want to read the NY Times. If we had both in hard copy we'd be able to share -- so why can't we share files on Kindles?
WHAT SURPRISED ME: I didn't expect to like reading text in this format, but it's great -- particularly the feature which allows you to enlarge text when you're feeling old and your eyes are tired. I like the way the Kindle bookmarks your page -- but this is also annoying if you have multiple readers enjoying the same book who are at different places in the book. Also, the counter which tells you that you're "26 percent" finished with the book, brings out my inner child with OCD, and I'm afraid I find myself rushing, thinking "I should be farther along in this book by now than 25 percent" -- also a joy if you're rushing to finish it before book club.
OVERALL ASSESSMENT: the good features clearly outweigh the bad and if you're thinking you'd probably like this, then you will. Everybody might end up using it slightly differently, however.

I've bought the kindle from Spain. I expected to find my favourite writers. I was very dissapointed when I saw that many of them are not available for my country. At the same time the web is not consistent and many times makes suggestions of books that you can not buy or display prices (even if you have signed on with your international account) that are not the real prices.
The device works well but without books of my interest is useless. I feel cheated by Amazon.

I received my Kindle about a month ago and I am hooked. I didn't know how I would like it since I love the feel of reading actual books, but this thing is awesome! I am usually in the middle of at least 3 books at any one time, and now I can do that with just one device rather than carry the books with me (especially if I am flying somewhere). Amazon is great also! I had noticed my Kindle had a slight defect and they sent me another one right away and I returned the original Kindle. Gotta love that kind of customer service!
International Travelers Beware

Information that you won't find except as a note in the users guide
For an extra $60 over the US only version I have the great fortune of being eligible to pay $4.99 extra per week for my subscriptions, or $1.99 extra per book!! Nearly as awesome as the original AT&T iphone data roaming "plans"
Since this was one of the main reasons I picked the kindle, it will probably get returned for a Nook (with WiFi which is ubiquitous)
Thank you Amazon for not identifying these fees up front...
