It's cheap insurance.
Your hard drive is going to fail. Why not back up what's most important (pictures, excel files, music) on a flash drive.
At $17. You can't go wrong.
Great buy.

I bought a 4 and an 8 GB flash drive to use as backups for my files, and to use for transporting files between my iMac, iBook, and my husband's PC. Just plug it into a usb port and drag files to it. Much easier than burning files onto a disk. Opening the files is just as easy. Click the icon on the screen and there they are.

Everything seemed as expected, but I haven't had to use all 3 of the drives yet.
I started by having Windoze format each drive, and there was the initial failure to read each drive when first inserted. I removed and re-inserted the drive which seemed to correct the initial relationship between them and my (less than 1 year old) PC.
Great item...works perfectly

I use this to run Linux based "live" sessions of various Linux distributions. Fast file transfer compared to other flash drives I have purchased. Easy to use and works great!
NOT for ReadyBoost

I simply wanted a cheap 2GB flash drive to use for ReadyBoost with an slightly older work PC running Vista. This particular model claims read speeds of "Up to 16MB/s," and write speeds of "Up to 8Mb/s." This seemed like it was well over the ReadyBoost requirements of 2.5MB read/ 1.75MB write. However, it still did not work for ReadyBoost. Apparently, what I found out later was that the ReadyBoost requirements are for random read/write speeds, whereas the seemingly fast specs of this device is apparently the sequential read/write speed.
Needless to say, it wasn't capable of ReadyBoost. The return shipping is more than the drive is worth, so I just kept it. My own fault for assuming, I suppose.
So, anyway, the lesson for me and whoever else might be considering this is this: Even though a flash drive may have fast specs, it still may not be enough for readyboost. If you want ReadyBoost, be sure to find one that actually claims to be ReadyBoost compatible -- don't just go by the advertised read/write speeds.
