Worthy upgrade from my first Tilt By W. Currie(Minneapolis, MN)
|
March 9, 2010Let me start off by saying I have made my living for years with Microsoft products. So I am biased towards Microsoft. I went to the local AT&T store to see the phone in action before purchasing. First, the AT&T sales rep did not know anything about the phone. The phone on display was totally flaky and needed to be rebooted a couple of times during the demo. Not the best sales presentation.
I had my Tilt for a year and half was ready to upgrade. I purchased two refurbished Tilt 2s for my wife and myself from the AmazonWireless store. Since I was upgrading, the cost was $50 each. I thought that was a good price.
First, the refurbished phones looked brand new when we receive them. Setup was easy and I love the HTC implementation of TouchFlo. Definitely needed on top of the out dated Windows Mobile UI. Feature for feature, this phone has pretty much everything. After my sales presentation, I did not have high expectations for the phone. I have been blown away both functionally and the big bright screen has a wow factor.
I have only had it for a few days and I put it through its paces right away. I pretty much use ever feature the phone provides. So far it has been exceptional. I will admit, sometimes when I click something, it may take a second or two before it loads, but I can live with that. The new Outlook mobile that comes Exchange Server 2010 is awesome.
Since I work in technology, I don't mind fussing with it if there are issues. A couple of times my first Tilt had some issues. I figured out fixes and did a couple of hard resets in the year and half I used it. This is not a problem for me since I can get my phone back to where I want it in short order. For all the complaints against Microsoft, the OS really does have many features just not a pretty UI. The TouchFLO UI helps cover some of the ugliness of the UI.
Tilt 1 owners beware the Internet Sharing is now disabled on the Tilt 2 without laptop tethering. You can either add the laptop tethering service or find a workaround.
I am very pleased with my purchase. Of all the technology I use, my phone is the most important. I use it all time. I use it running with Bluetooth headphones. Creating playlist is much easier using the HTC app versus Media Player. I use Google maps and/or Bing everyday to check traffic on my way to and from work. I browse the Internet all the time. I have written custom .NET apps for my phone. I loved my first Tilt and so far this phone is a significant improvement from that phone.
I am not saying this phone is for everybody. But for me, this is great phone. Since I have only had it for a few days take my review with a grain of salt. I will update the review if I do find issues.
This is a good phone By David C. Sweet(RI)

March 5, 2010I have had the Tilt 2 for 2 months now. The phone is big and heavy compared to other phones I have had. The size and weight don't bother me, but I can see some wouldn't like it. This is my first Windows phone and there was a lot to learn. I came from the original Palm platform. The phone crashed a few times on the first day because I opened too many programs. I found you can change a setting to just close programs rather than minimize, and no more problems with crashes. The screen and keyboard are nice. I like the FM radio. The stock software is good and I have added to it. The contact management is way better than Apple or Google. The web browsing is slow. My wife has an Iphone and I don't see Safari working much better. Sometimes I have to wait a couple of seconds for an application to load. This is not a big deal in my opinion. I like the stylus and find it more precise than my finger.
If you want many ways to customize your phone then this is a good phone for you. I was very happy with my last phone and I have figured out how to everything with this one that I did on the last.
3 Month Review By Home Theater Family
|
March 3, 2010Previous owner of a number of other windows mobile devices through AT&T including 8525, Tilt (wife's), Fuze, and now Tilt2. I'm obviously familiar with the platform but did consider others and thought seriously about the iPhone and Blackberry (wanted to try something different). Ultimate decision came down to 1) optional tethering/mobile modem on AT&T 3G for my laptop 2) ability to utilize TomTom or other GPS software with a full local map installation using microSD card i.e. no data streaming required so I can sit on a plane and plan out routes and get info. Exchange sync is also a key requirement but that's easy these days.
So here we are at 3 months. Contrary to other reviews it's been very stable for me. Maybe it's frozen once in that period and a simple on/off reboot worked fine - and I'm a business user with significant travel so I spend some time on this thing. Like my PCs I do reboot occasionally even for no reason just to keep it clean, average once every 1-2 weeks. Battery life has been better than all predecessors I get 2-3 days routinely with moderate use - this includes browsing, calls, and exchange sever updates every 10-15 minutes. I have no issue making it through a day with very heavy travel usage and a number of conference calls. This has been huge for me as it alleviates significant anxiety of needing to remember to charge it overnight or plug it in when able. The Fuze was a good improvement on predecessors but Tilt2 is FAR better.
If you really load up a lot of applications (ran into this a couple times) and don't every close them out via the task manager on the home screen you can make the phone sluggish but honestly this is all the user, I'd rather have the ability to open 6+ programs and toggle between them a bit more slowly than not be able to do this at all.
Phone quality is great. Best dialer so far. Speaker phone is amazing. Cool feature is that it can turn on automatically when you set the phone face down, i.e. convenient if you have to write something down quickly and then pick back up. Can use voice dialing/command via direct or headset. I've used "custom ROMs" in the past but this phone and my Fuze both had stock AT&T which I found acceptable, still a great customization community over at XDA Developers if someone wants to poke around. A number of apps installed but the only one that caused me grief was TomTom and map registration which was purely a TomTom service issue and now seems to be ironed out. GPS performance under all programs is very snappy and I get locks typically in 15-20seconds.
I actually liked this phone so much I told another friend who had the Fuze that it was a must have. He's also thrilled with it so far for many of the same reasons. If there's a problem with the phone it's the lack of marketing Microsoft/HTC have been doing compared to Apple/Google. Several of the negative reviews here are frankly a mystery to me which is why I thought it might be useful to post my experience. Short version - wouldn't trade it for anything, absolutely no regrets.
Locked up often! By Jesse E.(Oak Forest, IL United States)

March 3, 2010I purchased the Tilt 2 hoping that it would perform like the winner that it's billed.
The Tilt 2 performed well until I started adding Apps.
I purchased and installed SPB Mobil Shell. After a while, the Tilt 2 locked up. I'd have to reset it to get it working again.
Then, I installed MyPlayer and Aloqa. Again, same problem!!
It seems any non-Microsoft app lockes up the Tilt 2. I never had a problem when using Microsoft My Phone, Bing, My Space for Windows Mobile or any Microsoft App. I thought it was the phone. I exchanged it and same thing happened.
And, I think it's a bummer that Microsoft installed Software Version 6.5 on the Tilt 2 when Software Version 7 is to released any day now. And, no word on a freee upgrade.
I'm waiting for a confirmation from Amazon that they received my 2nd Return so that I can get me a Iphone from ATT Direct.
Buyer Beware!!!
NOT as good as the iphone, but better for me. By A. Chen

February 5, 2010
| 2 out of 2 found this review helpful I had an iphone and returned it because I have particular needs in a phone that the iphone doesnt quite satisfy. That being said the iPhone is a great phone and my wife has one and my daughter has one. I traded in my iPhone and went back to a windows mobile based phone, the blackjack II, which was good for what it was.
This is my fourth windows mobile phone - I had the htc 3125, the motorola mpx 220 (loved this one except the build quality was low so in 3 years I had 4 of them), samsung blackjack 2 (was fine - would have preferred the 1 which had a tilt wheel) and now the htc tilt 2. Im not a windows fanboy, but there are a few features of windows mobile that I really like and are my highest priority.
Here is what I like about windows mobile:
1) The dialing is by far the best of any phone OS ive used. This is the primary reason I dont use an iphone, it takes about 5 button clicks (activate button, slide bar, phone button, contacts tab, first letter of their last name (Which lots of times I dont know), then scroll). Even when they are in your favorites list it is a pain. Plus it typically takes 2 hands to dial. With the windows phones, the key to the dialing is that when you type in numbers on the # pad it matches letter combinations AND numbers. So I can dial people by whatever part of their name/number I remember. It doesnt just match the start of the name but any letter combo in the first or last name. Compared to the blackjack, the htc has two extra button pushes (unfortunately). I have to push the top to activate the phone, then the call button. On the blackjack 2 I could just start hitting letters/numbers and get right into dialing. When the phone list comes up I can just select the # vs with the blackjack having to scroll to highlight.
2) seamless integration with exchange, exchange. It took about 1 minute to connect to exchange and have my whole calendar, contacts, tasks and mail downloaded when I upgraded.
3) microsoft has the best calendaring system and windows mobile has it as well. I miss meetings with any other phone operating system because the snooze, dismiss and the way reminders work arent quite right on other phones. For example, if I ignore the 15 minute reminder and it shuts off, then at appointment time it rings again. It doesnt just ring once it keeps repeating for a reasonable time then goes quiet. The appointment reminder starts out quiet then gets louder, giving me time to check my phone without disrupting a meeting.
4) Ring once. Windows mobile is the only phone with ring once. This means in meetings I dont have to mess around with silent mode. I also typically dont answer my phone and it is quite annoying to have to pick it up to turn the ringer off.
5) AT&T has some features that you prob dont know about, like you can set that people can only see your caller id if they are in your phone book. You can set the # of times your phone rings before it goes to voice mail etc
----------------------------------
Where the tilt 2 is better than prior versions of windows mobile phones
1) bigger screen for actual reasonable web browsing, reading email
2) faster so it is really usable to browse
3) several choices of browsers
4) full keyboard makes typing an order of magnitude easier
5) wifi
6) The zooming is actually pretty good, they have a dedicated zoom bar and you just slide up or down to zoom. I find because the touch screen is hard to use that zooming is very difficult without the stylus.
Where the tilt 2 is not as good as prior versions of windows mobile phones
1) I prefer a clamshell, but I guess Im the only one as no one makes them anymore
2) slippery - what is with this shiny crap? The iphone was also too slippery which was quite annoying.
3) no physical keypad on front means extra clicks to dial
4) getting to the home page with the time is quite difficult based on where you are at on the phone. Used to be the home button always got you there
5) push to talk button is quite annoying. Need to figure out how to reprogram it to go to the home screen or something
6) tilt 2 is confusing to navigate compared to my older windows mobile phones
Where the tilt 2 is not as good as the iphone
1) Iphone screen is an order of magnitude easier to use. The touch sensitivity of the tilt 2 is quite annoying. For some reason I cant use it with one hand.
2) iphone has a much simpler layout which makes getting around easier. Windows mobile on the tilt 2 is incredibly complex. There is the touch flow bar, the home button page and the programs button page. There are hidden setup and settings things all over the phone. For example, I found an option to make it so the notes icon appears in the calling window so you can hand write notes while you are on a call. It didnt seem to work and now I cant find the option at all. Touch flow bar has an icon called settings and so does the start page (system settings I think) and so does the programs page.
3) visual voicemail on the iphone works great
4) threaded text messaging on the iphone is great. No threaded text messaging on windows mobile
5) safari browser is still MUCH better than opera, skyfire or i.e.
6) windows mobile applications all work slightly differently. quite annoying.
