The Good: Lego starter kit lets younger children build a house, car, dog, helicopter, and more.

The Challenging: Younger children may need help with following the instruction.

In a Nutshell: The ideal Lego starter kit for kids too old for Duplos.

The Ideal Lego Starter Kit
The Lego Ultimate Building Set includes everything a child needs to take the first steps to becoming an expert Lego builder. It includes one mini figurine, a building plate, and a wide mix of standard bricks in various colors as well as house and wheel elements.

Following the included instructions and using pieces in the starter kit, kids can build a house, helicopter, dog, and car. The only flaw is that the instructions may be challenging for younger children, and require adult assistance.

As is the case with virtually every Lego set, your child will be limited only by his, or her, imagination and perseverance. Although the kit is designed for younger children graduating from Lego Duplos, you can be confident that your child will never actually grow out of the Ultimate Building Set. All of the pieces can be incorporated into future Lego collections.

What's in the Box
405 standard Lego pieces with house and wheel element, mini figurine, durable plastic storage case, and instructions.

works well for a first set
By K. Wheeler (Colorado)  |  March 11, 2010
The box is only about 1/4 filled with legos. Really for the creative builder, you would need about three of these sets to build much of anything. My son received these on Christmas, and we haven't played with it very much. It just seems like the legos don't stay together very well, and every time we build something decent, it falls apart so easily, it is hardly worth the effort. Possibly legos have always been this way. I was more interested in dolls as a girl, so this is really my first lego experience. For now they are put up in his closet. Im hoping since he is a boy, he will "get it" more than I seem to, and one day be able to build wonders with his legos. Meanwhile he seems to favor his duplo blocks, lincoln logs, and regular wooden blocks.

Not for Small Children
By M. Seagraves (Sanford, NC)  |  March 11, 2010
I was very disappointed. The pieces are tiny and not appropriate for young children. This looks like a building set for adult or teenagers.

405 sounds like a lot, but isn't
By Igor (NC)  |  March 4, 2010
Legos are great, don't get me wrong... but it's a little disappointing when you are expecting 405 pieces to be a lot of legos (it's not). You will need to buy two or three of these to really go to town building. A little underwhelming.

My husband and my children love Legos. This is a really good deal when you consider the free shipping. Will definitely buy again.

Lego Building set
By W. Gutierrez (maryland United States)  |  February 24, 2010
This set was great. My kids were getting the sets that built specific vehicles and we wanted them to have more pieces to help them build anything in their imagination. This was a perfect starter set.
