Product Description

Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, looms. And mankind is not ready.

The final volume of the Wheel of Time, A Memory of Light, was partially written by Robert Jordan before his untimely passing in 2007. Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn books, was chosen by Jordan’s editor---his wife, Harriet McDougal---to complete the final book. The scope and size of the volume was such that it could not be contained in a single book, and so Tor proudly presents The Gathering Storm as the first of three novels that will make up A Memory of Light. This short sequence will complete the struggle against the Shadow, bringing to a close a journey begun almost twenty years ago and marking the conclusion of the Wheel of Time, the preeminent fantasy epic of our era.

In this epic novel, Robert Jordan’s international bestselling series begins its dramatic conclusion. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, struggles to unite a fractured network of kingdoms and alliances in preparation for the Last Battle. As he attempts to halt the Seanchan encroachment northward---wishing he could form at least a temporary truce with the invaders---his allies watch in terror the shadow that seems to be growing within the heart of the Dragon Reborn himself.

Egwene al’Vere, the Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, is a captive of the White Tower and subject to the whims of their tyrannical leader. As days tick toward the Seanchan attack she knows is imminent, Egwene works to hold together the disparate factions of Aes Sedai while providing leadership in the face of increasing uncertainty and despair. Her fight will prove the mettle of the Aes Sedai, and her conflict will decide the future of the White Tower---and possibly the world itself.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Superb!!!
By L.E. (Flint, MI)  |  March 21, 2010
I was worried after Robert Jordan passed away that the series would not end well. That the author hired to finish the series couldn't possibly pull it off, but I didn't have anything to be worried about. Brandon Sanderson did such a wonderful job that I could not tell the difference. Other people leaving reviews said that they could tell the difference in storytelling, but I could not. I've only read them once and so I don't claim to be a "Wheel of Time" expert. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment and cannot wait to read the ending. Brandon, thank you for taking on such a daunting task and doing such a great job at it. Thank you Robert Jordan for creating such an epic fantasy and for leaving notes when you knew that you wouldn't be able to complete it on your own. You truly cared about your creation and your fans. Thank you for sharing this world with us.

Breath of new life

First off, I have the highest regard for Robert Jordan and am so very glad that he relented from his earlier stance of not wishing for his series to be completed after his death. Thank you Mr. Jordan for outlining the final book(s) of the Wheel of Time so that your series did not end with your death.

With that in mind, I, as most of his devoted followers, struggled through the previous number of books. I could still see his genius, but his writing had become stagnant and plodding (now I've read the first 6 books 7+ times, and the rest at least 2 times each). Brandon Sanderson has brought back the early fire to the series and made me excited (almost giddy) about the Wheel of Time again.

This is not to say that I love everything about Mr. Sanderson's writing, but believe that he has done a fine job uniting both his style and Jordan's vision.

First, what I didn't like:
a) The staccato writing style of Sanderson was very distracting at first. During the first twenty pages I was wondering if I would be able to read the entire book (the extremely short sentences, and often incomplete sentences, while great for verbal communication loses something in written form), but after the first chapter I grew accustomed to it and it no longer became a problem.

b) The very brief appearances of some characters. I wish we could see them more. This has been a problem since book 5, but it can't be helped. With the size of the world, and number of characters spread across it, to have them all equally represented would be impossible. I look forward to seeing the "cast" back together in the next books so they appear more often.

What I loved:
a) Everything else. While I initially disliked Sanderson's writing style, after becoming used to it, I enjoyed his work. Thank you for taking up the torch and carrying it wonderfully. He did an excellent job showing political ramifications and interactions without making them plodding or boring. Most of all, despite his differing writing style, there were times I forgot that Jordan was no longer the author. Thank you for meshing your style and Jordan's vision so wonderfully.

Fantastic!

This is certainly one of the best books in the long, ongoing series. As a fan of Egwene, I was able to see her grow and excel throughout the book. The biggest surprise, for me at least, comes at the end when Rand makes a choice and the light of heaven literally shines upon him. There is little regarding Perrin in this part of the storyline, and virtually nothing of Mat; consequently only a tiny portion assigned to the Daughter of the Nine Moons. So if those are plotlines that you most eagerly anticipate, you'll have to wait until the next book to really see how they progress.

B. Sanderson hits a homerrun
By R. Fossi (Lakeland, FL)  |  March 17, 2010
This book begins to tie so many loose ends. After listening to the knife of dreams, I decided to purchase this title in the same format. I was curious whether it would flow and read as the others did. I was able to pick out differences between the authors as far as pace, and writing style (B Sanderson himself explains that he would NOT attempt to copy Jordan's style) but was pleased to find that having the same narrators helped weld the transition. I highly recommend the series, and the new author that is going to take us into the Blight for the Final Battle.

If I were Robert Jordan, I would RIP knowing his series ended in such capable hands.

Perhaps the best book in the series to date...
By Storm Faerywolf (Bay Area, CA United States)  |  March 16, 2010
I have been a fan of "The Wheel of Time" since the early 90's when a friend introduced me to the series. I will say that I felt that the late Robert Jordan stretched things out too far and I began to lose interest several books into it, but I made myself get through them anyway. (Winter's Heart numbed my brain!) I was worried that a new writer would mess things up but I actually found the transition pretty much seamless; Brandon Sanderson has done an excellent job in taking the story to the next level as the Last Battle looms.

If you were a fan of the series, but "opted out" a few books ago, let me say that there is reason enough in "The Gathering Storm" to return to the fold; I found the story and characters exciting and right on the mark. I can't wait for the last two books to come out now!

Thank you, Mr. Sanderson, for moving this forward. Your considerable talent is very much appreciated.
