Re: More power

$3000 will buy you alot of power, especially if you're doing the work yourself. There are alot of vendors on some of these websites, and the majority of them are stand-up guys and extremely knowledgable, and then there are a few that aren't. And not everyone who posts and sounds like they know what they're talking about actually do know what they're talking about. Just don't jump into this without doing some research.
I'm lucky I have a lifelong buddy that knows quite a bit and is a machinist who ports heads on the side. We did gear drive cams, 95' big bore and ported heads for about $1400 total. (tack on $695 for Thundermax Autotune) I gained approx. 15-20 hp and torque. It's possible to spend $3000 and end up with an unreliable dog. Don't be in a rush, do your research, and don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Best of luck,
Toad

Re: More power

Another issue with the 96 engine is the (throw away) crank that Harley went to. It is not recommended for high rpm. I am in the process of getting mine replaced with only 17,000 mile on it. The only thing I have done to mine is Thundermax with the rev limit at 6048 rpm, high flow air cleaner, and V/H Two into One. I wish someone would come out with a reliable aftermarke crank for this engine
