Catalytic Mufflers - 851 days old
The left side of the pic is the outlet end of the muffler, Both ends were removed because it was just easier to get it apart this way. The solid part at the right of the pic is the catalyst.
The new 09 bikes have the cat located in the forward pipe so slip on mufflers can be used and still retain the catalytic converter.

Many of the touring bikes at one time or another will experience a squeaking coming from the rear of the bike when hitting some bumps. You'll also see that there is some play in the rubber mount where the support bracket (muffler) can move up and down a bit, this is normal.
The length of the support bracket when properly installed is... Read more

Harley Exhaust Comparison - 521 days old
Here's some interesting info posted by TQ about exhaust.
Harley exhaust choices vary almost as much as those who ride. Drag pipes, slip-fit mufflers, 2-1, staggered duals, and the list goes on. An exhaust system is made for every bike, engine, style, and configuration imaginable. However, there is a big difference between performance... Read more

Cat Converters - 482 days old
From Jamie at Fuel moto:
The only 09 Touring models that have a catalyst in the head pipe are the 09 California models, CVO models, and bikes manufactured for international export. No CAT's on 96" motors. This can also be verified on page 30 of your owners manual for the 09 bike as noted:

True Dual Tip - 720 days old
Many have asked about true dual exhausts for Harleys. There are some advantages and some disadvantages to the systems.
True duals will loose a bit of torque on the bottom end from the loss of scavenging but some like them for looks and sound in any event. It's a personal preference for the most part. They will also remove some of the... Read more

88 Mufflers On A 96 Engine - 141 days old
Some confusion on this subject....
It depends on the type of muffler that comes from an 88 as to whether it can be used on a 96.
Keep in mind that some of the older 88 mufflers were the same muffler type with maximum flow through both mufflers and both the same part numbers in some cases, usually the ones without the dimple for the... Read more

Wrapping Exhaust Pipes - 160 days old
Here is a word of warning - save your money on the exhaust wrap and do not do it, it looks great and is awesome on a full custom but if you intend to use it as i do as daily transportation, it will cause you a lot of issues down the line, with cracked and accelerated wear on the pipe, it plasticizes the metal and rots them from the inside... Changing Slipons - 466 days old
TQ posted this for a wide glide so it's been copied here.
Now for my own "quick and dirty" on changing the exhaust.
Obviously, you have to pick a replacement that is made (contoured) for your bike (engine, year, model).
Look at the stuff you have to put back on, and hold it close to where it is gonna go to make sure it... Read more

Here's a few reasonable cost slip on mufflers that have a sound similar to the older SE II slip ons.
