This video will show you a few things about spark plugs and how to determine how the engine is running.Not as useful as in days past with leaded fuel but proper heat range is important also.

A quick way to test plug wires is with the engine running to spray some water from a mist bottle onto the wires and watch for arcing or sparking to ground which would result in a stumble in the running of the engine. If you get either of these symptoms, it's time to replace the wires.
