Blackpowder rifles/pistols

Anybody shoot a blackpowder rifle/pistol? I had a 50 cal Hawken that was fun to shoot. All that I have left now is my Sharps 45 cal buffalo rifle.

Re: Blackpowder rifles/pistols

I have just one, a full custom long rifle with Greenriver barrell in .40 cal. Legal for deer in KY and highest legal calibur for squirrel too, so very versitile. Harvested a couple nice 8 pointers with it. Had several black powder over the years, mostly .45 or .50, fan of the Hawkins style too. Like black powder not Pyrodex.

I have a Brown Bess, fires a nice round .75 ball, and a percussion Mauser circa 1858 rifled musket in .54 cal, also a dragoon .69 cal flintlock pistol (cant hit zip with it) and a .45 plains rifle and pistol to match. All loads of fun and real head turners when they speak!

Back when I first started getting interested in black powder guns, all they had locally was Pyrodex. I used it until I found a friend of mine that could get me the real thing. I gave what was left of my Pyrodex to a friend of mine and now all I use is Goex black powder. I found it to be more consistant in burning than the Pyro, while not as clean, it is more authentic.

Re: Blackpowder rifles/pistols

I preferr the real thing myself, not only because its more authentic, but I found pyrodex a little on the week side, and very corrosive, even more than bp.If you cant clean your bp shooter right away,I found a good drenching in WD40 softens the crud deposites, and helps keep the rust bugs at bay!
