target shooters ?
O.K guys picked up a nice .22 target pistol last wkend a s-w 22a-1 and I'm wondering if some of you old bullseye shooter are out there . what size groups say at 50 ft and 25yds are realistic to hope for when shooting off hand? I was able to hold about a dime size group 2x 's at 21 ft

If you get onto websites of gunsmiths who redo target pistols, you can get an idea of what the "pros" are using and what group size they are getting out of their guns. When I shot bullseye years ago, I had a reworked .45 auto that was capable of 2" @ 50 yds. At the time, that was the "standard". Today, with modern metals and computerized machining, lord knows what is possible. Any group measuring that I did, was always from a rest, as I was never a "rock solid" shooter. Remember also, moving the target distance further will definitely open up the groups. That .45 I mentioned would do sub 1" groups at 25 yds. Also keep in mind that just as a centerfire shooter will try different loads, so too, .22 shooter can try different .22 loads. Back in the day, Eley "tennex" was the standard and what I used in my modified Ruger and also my S&W model 17.
