Dry Firing 1911 ?

I read an article ina mag the other day and the author talk about dry firing his 1911 for practicing his trigger pull. said he would do this for 2 hrs at the time everyday. I can understand the practice secession....but that much dry firing. I always heard that was not good for the handgun or any gun....except Ruger....My question?...is it ok to dry fire a SA1911?

Quite OK, but as mention by Bud White, get a snap cap if you are concerned. I have snap caps for the pistols that I dry fire often. Others that are used less, don't get a snap cap. And finally, never dry fire a .22 rimfire, that will damage the firing pin.

Ok, on the 1911 Colt '45 and if you have a custom trigger job, pull the trigger back and then rack the slide to bring the hammer back then release the trigger. Reason is that your will really mess up your custom trigger job. The sear will be damaged to the point of having to "retune" it again.

UJ brought up a good point, dry firing issue is not only about firing pin wear, but the trigger sear and release points heat treated after custom tuning and heavily lubricated to prevent premature wear, by using his method...sure makes a lot of sense with that much dry firing.

if your custom trigger job can be messed up that easy ...it really was custom read junk .. Call les Baer / Wilson / or ed brown they will tell you its ok to dry fire as long as you use snap cap though they would prefer live fire.. just remember to hold the trigger down as you cycle the slide i just use a mag of snap caps since thats how the gun actually runs you cant left finger off trigger before it cycles

Reason why i say that a a retune of the sear is usually the hammer hooks were cut below .20 usually down .16 when is to small to hold the sear and it starts battering the nose .. seen a lot of those trigger jobs while that last a little while they would have taken the sear out long before a good trigger job would or broke the hammer hooks .

Don't know a darn thing about 1911's but, I dry fire my Glock 27 as much as I possibly can find time for. There is no better way to master trigger control, which is a major factor in accuracy, especially in regards to follow up shots (double tap). JMHO

Re: Dry Firing 1911 ?

The Springfield 1911 I use for IDPA has close to 25,000 rds. through it and has been dry fired many, many thousands of times. No damage yet! With the cost and availability of ammo and reloading components I see much more dryfiring in its future!
