Re: Harley VIN Identification
I found a used bike with high mileage at a dealership. The salesman assures me that it has a new engine, but can't produce any paperwork confirming this. How can I tell if the engine is new(er)? If a new crate engine is purchased for a used bike, will the number on the motor match the frame's vin number?

Re: Harley VIN Identification
They re stamp the vin number on the factory rebuild so that wouldn't tell you anything. There should be a computer record if it was done at the dealer. How does the engine look as compared to the condition of the bike itself?
You may take a compression test that would tell you if it was an old engine in need of work or a newer one in decent shape. |

Re: Harley VIN Identification
Iffn I knew this info March 07 I wouldn't be where i am now-suing the last owner of my FatBoy for my money back. Seems mine came up on the FBI's list Here in Ashland and was siezed--illegally--- by the feds, along with 50+ others.
So a word from one who has and is still there, be sure it is genuine H-D. |

Re: Harley VIN Identification
The engine looks very clean, relative to the rest of the bike. I will definately check the compression. The work wasn't done at the selling dealership. Is there a database of H-D service shops, where I could type in the VIN and find the history of this bike? The CARFAX came up clean.

Re: Harley VIN Identification
All I know is the bike was purchased new in Alaska, and traded in at Eastside Harley in Washington. I'll try to get the previous owner's info from the dealer, but I assume they would protect a customer's anonimity.
