I was told (before I found HDtalking) to do it at the end of every riding season, before parking for the winter. Unfortunately, my first season or two, I didn't know this, so I would park the bike & have it serviced before the next riding season. I now do it at the end of the season.

However the oils will mix no problem. Any of the quialty 20/50 true sny will serve you much better tahn the standard oils. The thing about mixing goes way back years ago oil companys all had "special additives" There were a few case when some from the different companys additives reacted with each other, the problem has long ago been taken care of.

I change my oil and filter every 3000 miles unless I'm going on a long trip 2-up and packed for a few days of riding. Then I change it before and after the trip. Overkill? Maybe but no crankcase noises to scare me and now that I have changed to Mobil V-Twin 20-50 it's quieter than new.
