Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

According to the manual the oil should be changed:

in the engine every 5k
in the primary every 10k.
in the transmission every 20k

I have seen every milage number from 2500 up.

Seems to be personal preference, Glider, Top, Joy, what say you?

Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

Like said above, I like every 3K with a filter as well as the primary and trans. Overkill but I like it that way. It's only a quart in the trans and one in the primary in most bikes and I know it's a clean as it can be then.

Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

Hi,

I am new to all of this, I bought a '09 fatboy just before Labor Day.

I need to schedule the 1,000 mile fluid replacement and check-up. Would you request the oils I want to be used at this time or wait until the next mile marker and just do it myself at that time?

Thanks,

Steve

If your taking it in make sure they carry the oils and lube you want.
If they do not ask if they will install what you bring in.
If not find a new dealer.

Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

I took Mobil 1 V-twin and Spectro Platinum to the dealer for the 1000 mile and they had no problems installing it. Of course they stock Form + Seems like I remember them even asking what fluids I wanted to use when I made the appointment.

I do mine every season, but I am a fair weather rider. I only get 2500 to 3000 miles a year.

Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

I changed all mine at 600 klms.I really wanted to do it sooner, but just never got around to it.Between work and family and housework and yardwork--

My bike had syn 3 in all spots and i do have to say i was VERY surprised how it came out.It was a honey colour, which indicated from the engine at least, that not much contamination had occured. There was NO fuzz on either the engine or g/box plugs;although a bit on the primary one.Interestingly enough, the oil in the filter was pretty black .

I put Mobil synthetics and F/plus back in.That will do until my first service sometime early next year.My oil and filter changes will be twice a year because my riding is sporadic.

Re: How often do you change your oil and filter

5W-40 is too light for the harley motors. 20/50 would be a better choice even if it wasn't synthetic but made for a V Twin.
