I am new to the HD talking and have been reading all of the very useful posts. My question is the result of the posts on Mobil 1 75/90 gear oil. In my research I came upon the Mobil 1 web site Application for Mobil 1. This is a copy of it.

Applications

Mobil 1 Synthetic gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 is intended for initial fill, topping-off or refilling differentials, final drives, transfer cases and other gear applications where lubricants meeting API Service GL-5 and multi-purpose or mild EP gear lubricants are recommended

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended

Not recommended for automatic, manual or semiautomatic transmissions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluids are recommended
Where extended service intervals and warranties are required

???????????? I am confused with this Recommendation????????????
Any clarification would be great

Well just completed the Trans/Primary fluid change and put in the Spectro 75W140 Gear lube and for the primary heavy duty primary chain chase oil. I have been reading about the GL ratings and looking at the 75w140 is a GL1 and the 6 speed lube is a GL5.

What the heck is the difference? I hope I did not put anything in the bike that will do damage to the trans!! What is the difference because reading what is on the spectro site the 75w140 formulated specifically for Harley big twin Trans.

I have a 07 Road King with a 6 speed, The Bike does shift better and alot less noise from the trans since doing the change. I did look for the 6 speed stuff but was unable to find it here in Virginia Beach.

Just want to make sure I made the right choice or do I need to get the stuff out and put something else in there.

Thanks for any help given.

ALL, I just bought my 2001 Heritage - the dealer changed out all the fluids and used reg HD oils. I have no idea of any mods that may have been done. I believe its pretty much just pure stock. Anyway, I read a post by glider to check the oil HOT - well mine has so much foam in the tank that it hardly sticks to the dipstick. I have a couple of questions; 1) is the dino oil supposed to be that foamy? 2) how do I check the oil levels - COLD maybe?

I have one of those neat little oil temp gauge dipsticks - HOT engine only shows about 180-200 degrees on that temp gage - after riding for about 40 miles or so.

Well...I have been trying to figure out what is the best...oil to use in My 2008 FXDC Super Glide.

I have been searching for almost a month now and from what I can find....the BEST oil is " What you are confortable with"!!!!

In my 6 Yammies I had since 1980 to 2008 I always used Castrol 20w50 Motorcycle oil...and never had any problems.

But now with the Harley.... I am going to try AMSOIL..20w50 in the Engine.....10w40 in the Primary....75w90 or 110 Gear lube in the Tranny.....sure hope those guys at AMSOIL know what they are talking about.

They tell a good story....so I will see this spring....when I change my oil.

I live way up north ...in Northern Canada.....where we get winter 5 months of the year....cuts down on the ammount of miles you put on your bike....or you can ride and freeze your face off.

I am wondering if I use synthetic oils.... if it will be better in cooler weather...we get some hot days...but the majority of our weather is cool...and when you get into the mountians...it stays cool.

Also storing the bike in a unheated shop...where it can drop to -40... (I do the winter storage thing )...but I wonder if synthetic oil would be better????

more world peace please!

A few weeks ago the dealership sold me a Drag Specialties filter wrench and insisted it would fit. Its the kind you use with a ratchet, and it has a notch out to accommodate some fittings nearby.

Today I was changing my oil in preparation for winter storage. I have a 2010 FLSTC.

The filter is just too close to the engine block. The wrench *would* fit, but there's a small ridge around it and it will not seat squarely on the filter and it just slips off when I try to turn it.

There must be a better wrench - any suggestions?

Also, the oil (AMSoil) that I drained out and the filter only have about 800 miles on them. Is it ok to just put 2.5-3qts of oil in it and drive it in the spring with the existing filter?

2010 FLSTC, in Mid Oct did the 1K service at about 1250 miles. Put Amsoil 20/50 in the engine. Bike has about 1950 now.

Just got back from running errands. Thought I'd check the oil while the engine was hot. The oil level was just above the 'Full' line not the 'Full Hot' line. Should I put more in? how much? (probably about .5" until full hot line).

I gave them 4 quarts and they gave me 1/2 quart back, so I'm sure they put 3.5 quarts in when they changed it, so in thinking about it, I worry that its burning it. Unfortunately I didnt check it when I first got it back after the 1K.

Thoughts?

Just turned 5K miles and am considering changing from HD360 to M1. On my 08' Softail I changed to Amsoil Syn at 1K miles and started using 8oz of oil every 500 miles. I also put on a power commander and straight pipes. I don't know if the oil burn was cause or effect. My 09' burns 2 oz of oil in 2500 miles which I am very happy with.
Here is the question? Do any of you notice increased oil consumption after changing to synthetic?

It has 53000 miles on it and I just bought it this year and have no idea what kind of oil has been run in it but am thinking about going with Amsol since it is easy to get here locally. Have talked to several about going to synthetic and some say do and some say dont. What is your opinion and what weight oils should be used in each hole. I want to change all three holes so was just wondering what I should do. I did get the original HD filter for the evo at a dealer in Bowling Green Kentucky about a month ago so know I have the correct filter for the bike. Thanks for any input on this. BTW how much in each hole too. Ride safe and enjoy all this nice fall weather.:cheers

Need some sage advise from the learned and wise that inhabit this site.
I’m getting ready to service my 05 FLHRCI and the wife’s 09 FXDL.
The Dyna calls for oil filter #63798-99A which is 5 micron (chrome). No problem there.
In the service manual for the RK it calls for oil filter part # 63798-99 which it says is a 10 micron filter.
Parts guy at HD says no, they both run the same fitler. I know the “A” behind a part # means they have made some small design change to the original part so is it safe to assume all the twin cams now run 5 micro filters.
Just want to be sure.
Thanks in advance
