Which nuts are left hand thread?
Any thoughts on going to a larger pulley rather than going with a six speed tranny?
Thanks guys for your help.

I recently purchased a a motorcycle that was a basket case. :devil I have had nothing but problems with a so called a good parts. Now that I have the motorcycle together, I find that the transmission will not shift properly.

It feels as if the racket part of the shifter is not working. My first thought is that there is a spring off or something like that. I can get it to go into different gears but I must shift it back and forth many times to get it from one gear to another. There is no noise coming from the transmission so I am rather convinced that the gears are OK.

The neutral light switch does not seem to be working either. I have never even looked inside of the transmission before. So I am at a loss of what to do. Or what to even look for.

If anyone out there can give me some ideas what it may be I would appreciate it.:cheers

Broken transmission / front pulley (1994 FXR)

Dear all,

Dear all,

I have the following problem with my FXR Superglide 1340cc from 1994:

When I rode away from home the other day, I suddenly lost traction and a very disturbing rattling noise came from my engine / transmission.

I removed the primary case, chain w. clutch, housing to find out that when I turn the 'ingoing' shaft in my transmission, the front pulley / belt / rearwheel do not turn, and the rattling noise is there again.

This is the case in every gear I try. I opened the transmission cover, everything looks well inside (but I am not an expert...)

I suspect the connection between the front pulley and the outgoing shaft from the transmission is broken. I guess this is a spline, but I am not sure.

I am trying to remove the front pulley-nut (with a 50mm socket - we do not have that much inch sockets in the Netherlands) but, apparently due to the fact that something is broken, something inside is also rotating and the nut won't come loose.

There is also that metal plate w. to allen-screws, I don't understand what is does. Currently nothing since I removed the allen screws and the nut glides over it anyway --> this might be the cause of the problem?

Wow - a long story, in short, my questions are:
- How is the pulley attached to the outgoing shaft of the transmission?
- What is the function of this metal plate?
- Can this metal plate be the reason that my pulley doesn't rotate when I turn the ingoing axle of my transmission (in any given gear).
- The nut on the pulley 'glides over' this metal plate - can this be the reason that things broke down?
- If not, what else can be the reason for this (maybe inside the transmission?
- How can I remove the metal plate and the front pulley (I tried an air-gun), is it left or right turning? (I believe I should turn it counterclockwise to remove it).

I might not be able to explain everything perfectly, due to my lack of technical english (that's the disadvantage of being Dutch), but any indications, hints etc. are more than welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Hi all,
I'm just changing my primary oil in my 09 FLHT tourer. I've come across an unusual bit of info in the owners manual that makes me wonder.

My old 03 FLHT was 32 ounces to fill (1 quart bottle) When i did this it came to the bottom of the clutch pack.

My new 09 specifies 38 ounces to fill. I just put 32 ounces into it and again it came to the bottom of the clutch pack. The same as my 03.

Something doesn't add up to me. :33:Or is Harley putting more oil into the Primary trying to get it to run cooler? Should I put the extra amount of oil into the primary regardless and see how it goes or leave it at the 32 ounce level, the same as the 03

Your wisdom is much appreciated.
Thanks

Neil

About half the time when starting in neutral I have to hit the shift lever twice to get into first. Warm or cold. The first "shift" makes the neutral light go off but it doesn't go into gear. The second "shift" puts it into gear. Sometimes on the second "shift" I can hear/feel it go into gear, sometimes it makes no sound and I only know it's in gear by letting out the clutch. Once it's in gear it's in. Shifts perfectly into first from second every time.

2005 Heritage, 6800 miles. I've had it about a month and it had 5500 when I got it. About 100 miles ago I changed primary oil to Mobil 1 20/50 V-Twin and the tranny oil to Mobil 1 75/90. I don't know what was in it before. I also adjusted the clutch by the book and lubed the linkage while I was at it. No difference.

Any ideas?
