Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
Always.............always use the highest test possible. Usually 93, sunoco used to sell 94. I also have the luxury of a feul depot near my house where............I can buy 110 or 112 race fuel. Makes the bike ride much better! cooler more responsive. I hear that the high octanes can help you tune your cab easier, must be easier to tell if you are lean or rich. Also instead of black in the tail pipes, the black turns to White. Smells like raceday! Two drawbacks, 1 it is about$7/gallon and 2 can only be used in carburated bikes, sorry newbies, lol. Mines a carb so its an every once in a while thing.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
I remember Sunoco at 103 octane from the normal pumps. I wouldn't run the race fuel if you want a long life out of the engine.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
All I can find is 91 oc, but tore down top end and found drops of water on top of piston from the E10 fuel, the stuff is JUNK

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
I have never burned anything except gasoline from the local Murphy's station. I use them because they are easy to find (usually in the parking lot of the local Walmart). I never use anything except the 87 blend. I have yet to experience any pinging whatsover, even in 100 degree weather. The ECM will correct a little it the need be. Unless my brother-in-law owned the station, I have seen no reason to pay another 20-35 cents per gallon for higher octane than what the engine requires. Usually I see Murphy tanker trucks dumping fuel there but if they can't keep up with it you will see name brand tankers dumping fuel too. I like to buy fuel somewhere that sell a lot of it because the likelyhood of getting bad guess is almost nil. The fact that it is usually the lowest price doesn't hurt anything either. I am not one who subscribes to the notion that the more you pay, the better the results.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
I've got an 03 Road King with Hooker tuned flow slip-ons and Fuel injection with stock air cleaner. All I can get around here (AZ) is 91 oc. She likes to ping if I roll on from lower RPMs, but does not run too hot, and runs well otherwise. I'm thinking that the octane is just a bit shy, but maybe also a bit lean. I have the stock ECM with no outboard fuel management. Anybody use the HD fuel additive for lower octanes, so help with pinging? Would a TFI help with the lower RPM pinging? I'm guessing my machine (recently acquired) is using an HD download, which is likely on the lean side.
Ideas? Thanks, Rich P |

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
Sticking to 91 or 93 from now on.
I tried running a tank full of 87 through my recently acquired '89 FLTC (because the down pipe told me 87 or higher is fine), and my goodness was that a mistake. There was popping and sputtering everywhere. Started filling back up with 93, and back to running well. "Less than 10% ethanol", because it's the only thing available around here. |

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
Use 89 Octane when riding solo, if riding two up 91 Octane...no pinging in either case, but on my Katana could easily tell the difference in performance...
