Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
Generally i use 91 octane at a station only 1 mile from home,as i am usually passing by on way home so i fill it up.otherwise i usually fill up at local wal-mart and they have 93 octane.when out on the road with the guys i ride with we usually fill up at bp or shell as thats all they will use.
Today i ran about 120 miles of mixed riding on 2 lanes and interstate, ran at 50-60mph on 2 lanes and at 70mph with cruise on out on the interstate with the 93 octane wal-mart gas and it gave 44mpg. As a rule im not usually fussy about gas as long as it is 91 or better.did use some 87 octane last summer when i was out and i lost 10mpg.whats you guys experience with low octane. |

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
The octane grades in my area are 87, 89 and 91. My neighbor and I bought our 09 Roadglides a few days apart and put in a few tankfuls of 91 before and after we did the Stage 1 upgrade. My neighbor then installed a big bore kit and got back his "old" pistons, which were only about 2 months old. The tops of the pistons had quite a lot of unburned gas residue. I didn't see much point in using 91 octane if it wasn't going to completely burn so I switched to 89 octane and the bike seems to run just fine - No pinging and mileage in the low 40's.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
I wonder if using the high test is a waste of money on a stock or slightly modded motor. Sure lots of us use it but does it really do any more than the silver or whatever is one lower than the high test? I have put 92 in then 94 and not noticed a difference.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
92 or 93 should be OK but I like to use the 93 which is as high as we get here, especially in the hot weather.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
I run 93 most of the time but I work in Aviation so I will also run 100LL in it which I dont really see a big differnce but man it makes the exhaust smell so good!!!

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
The higher octane really does nothing for the motor but it can damage the valves if run in excess. The best octane for your motor is one that will eliminate any pinging but I run 93 in any event.
Octane ratings aren't what they use to be years back like when Sunoco had 103.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll
The highest we can get here on the central coast of California is 91 octane. I'm going through several states to and from Sturgis next month and I'm wondering whether I should try some 93 octane or just stick with the 91. (if I can find it.)
