Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

I use 93..However on our trip out west we found it hard to find 93. Talked to a HD dealer in New Mexico he told us they normally burn 89 w/o a problem coz it really doesn't stay in the tank long. However they use a octane booster...so I suggested the cost difference he's really not saving any money. He informed me wasn't about saving money. Just hard to find 91 or 93 in his area like lots of places out west.

Thumbs up Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

The main purpose of running a higher octane is to avoid detonation (pinging) which can cause real damage to pistons and cylinders. Higher octane fuels will be more necessary at lower altitudes. If your running a 93 octane (if you can get it) in Denver, you're wasting your money. On the other hand if you're running a lower octane at lower elevations, you're asking for trouble.
If you tour to different altitudes, consider upping your octane as you come down in altitude.
I live at 2000+ ft. I use an 89 or 91. 93 is not available, or necessary, here.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

Just picked up my new bike the other day. I specifically asked the dealer about the octane of fuel to run and they recommended 92 or higher. I wouldn't think that a 9.5:1 compression engine would need anything that high, but I don't build these engines so I'm not gonna argue the point with the dealer. It's only around $15 to fill up the bike with 93 octane fuel so that's what I'm gonna use.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

I live in the Dallas area and use only 93 octane. All of the major brand stations offer 93 octane.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

This week I was paid to ride about 600 miles .Long story work stuff some one elses mistakes to fix.
Away in a big rush and running on fumes I pull in to gas station grabe the 87 octane instead for they 92 and pump in 4.9 gallons of gas in 5 gallon tank befor in see what I did.
Bike ran just fine I ran the tank down to almost empty the 87 did not make a bit of difference in it. Not sure if I will make this a habbit.
07 RG 13,000 miles with the 0903 ecm update.
I mention the update only because sence it was done my bike runs better. And pull 6th gear much better at a lower speed than befor.

Re: Grade Of Fuel Poll

Wow, I topped my bike off with Sunoco 93 the other day and the bike didn't seem to run as good as before I fueled it and actually was pinging.. I just topped it off with 1.5 gallon. Now, I think I realize what is going on.

The pumps I use are single hose pumps and the guy/gal before me obviously due to high price of fuel is putting in the lowest octane and cheapest fuel he/she can use. Now I come along and use same hose to top my bike off with 93 and I am actually getting the cheap fuel that is in the hose all the way back to where it mixes the fuel at pump. That could be a half gallon or more of cheap low octane fuel that I am paying top dollar for. This is crazy. I think I am gonna start fueling at stations with separate fuel nozzles. AM I NUTS? Anybody have any thoughts on this?
