Dual Issues Speedo and Turn Signals
I wasn't sure if these were or could be related, but here is what happened.
I went out for a stretch today, gassed up and reset my trip odomoter. 10 miles later, as I was going along... noticed that my speedo had stopped working, and then noticed that my turn signals (which normally turn off by themselves) were not doing that anymore. They work, but they stay on (have to kill the switch myself). Tach is working fine, just no speedo, so I've got NO idea how far I went today. And the flashers aren't a problem, I can hit the switch myself I suppose... but it's not working as it has been. At first I was thinking a fuse... but not sure if that would affect the speedo... checked the cable and all seems intact. Thank you! |

Re: Dual Issues Speedo and Turn Signals
That's almost the exact same thing that happened with mine, DK. A new voltage regulator got my speedo working and I think I've got the turn signals narrowed down to bad switches. Are you still under warranty or not? If you are, don't even take out a screw. I've gotten more grey hair trying to figure these gremlins out than in all my 44 years put together. Otherwise, start simple and work your way in deeper. Check all of your bulbs and clean the contacts first. Just a heads up..if anyone says "Turn signal module" to you, hang on to your wallet! The one for mine was $149.00. Dealer only item, of course, and it is wired into that circuit. If you've got a shop manual, follow the flow chart. Just my 2 cents'

Re: Dual Issues Speedo and Turn Signals
Thanks Joe, Hobbit. I'll look into those things then.
No warranty here, I was merely curious if the two events could have been connected, as it seemed they went on the fritz at the exact same time. I'm bringing the bike back to the dealer next weekend for the final "fix" from it being laid down last year, so perhaps I'll just have them look at it at the same time. May cost a bit, but from what I understand, electrical issues can be a tough one if you do not know what you're doing. Thanks again. |

Re: Dual Issues Speedo and Turn Signals
Broken speedo cable. The directional problem is a result of the reed switch in the speedo not operating because of the cable broken. The switch pulses as the speedo turns and is a counter for distance to turn off the directionals.
Tiny screw facing downward on the drive unit on the wheel will come out and let you unscrew the cable from the unit counterclockwise . Probably if the top end isn't broken, it's the bottom end that is broken off in the drive unit and tweasers will remove it, possibly a magnet. May end up having to remove the front wheel to get the unit off and tap it on a bench to get the piece out. It just slides in to the drive unit. Don't know if just the inner is available, you may have to order the entire cable.

Re: Dual Issues Speedo and Turn Signals
Thank you for the diagnostic. I (finally) got my service manual, this past week, just in time it appears. So I'm hoping between the two, (having an idea where and what to look for), I'll be able to fix this myself and save the dealer (and myself) some headaches.
Thank you again. |
