Turn signal/speedo issue

Got a gremlin I was wondering if someone could help with. I have a 1999 FXSTC softtail and all of a sudden the speedo and turn signals started acting up. I first noticed the speedo quit, then when I hit either turn signal they would get bright but not blink. Then one night on my way to work I noticed the headlight got a little dimmer and everything started working just fine. A buddy had told me to check all the connections under the tanks and hit them with contact cleaner, which I did with no improvement. Just started working on it's own.
Last weekend I washed it and the gremlins are back. Don't know if that is the issue or not, but it is irritating as hell. I was told it was the turn signal module but before I dump upwards of $150.00 on a new one I thought I would see if someone may have any ideas. When the speedo quits, it quits. No display, no mileage count-off, no nothing. The needle stays at whatever speed I was going when it decided to quit.

Re: Turn signal/speedo issue

Well, I found out the rear tire rubbed all three wires to my taillight in two. Fixed that and thought I had figured it out. Went for a ride and got a mile up the road and it crapped out again. About twenty miles later it came back and (knock on wood) hasn't quit. I thought those little bells were supposed to get rid of the gremlins...

Re: Turn signal/speedo issue

That's a rather common problem but more so in the softails. Glad you found it.

Re: Turn signal/speedo issue

I had a feeling that was too simple of an explanation. Coming and going again. I noticed that when I'm slowing down, such as for a stop sign, it comes back on and then in the neighborhood of 30 mph it craps out again. Then, maybe it will work and maybe not.

Re: Turn signal/speedo issue

Have you done anything with the speed sensor on the trans?

Re: Turn signal/speedo issue

I'm about to go to the dealer with this thing. I took the sensor out and cleaned off the filings. No good. Took out all the bulbs and cleaned the contacts and checked the wires. Zip. Checked and cleaned the module. Zilch. Any more clues before I have to sell my children into slavery to pay the thieves at the dealer?
