Main Drive Gear Seal 93 dwg

Looking for what a person may need to change the main drive gear seal? I leak between the two shafts which, I thought was a quad seal. Anybody ever been here before?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Main Drive Gear Seal 93 dwg

you'll need a clutch hub puller, which may pull the compensating sproket (or pully w/belt drive,) a 2" very deep well socket "about 6"deep)to get the sprocket nut off and a seal driver...the 2 nuts off the trans are left hand threads...don't use an impact on the comp nut (right hand thread) and a torque wrench...you'll have to get that comp nut up to about 160 ft lbs, the others about 40-60 good luck...oh yeah...and a manual...

What Gary said and this may give you some insight too as to what's involved. And a manual too

Re: Main Drive Gear Seal 93 dwg

Glider...where do you come up with these...? amazing...
Donnie mentioned the main drive gear bearing seal...which is behind the trans sprocket.and that it is leaking fron the push rod inside the main shaft...the bearing seal is replaceable with trans in the bike, the quad seal he referrs to I'm not so sure about, I'll get into transmissions in about 6 weeks...
Donnie...
I have the exact same problem as you only mine leaks from the kicker side also...mine is an 83 FXWG with a cowpie top as apposed to a rachet type...I am going to replace my trans with a 4 speed with a rachet top and use the current trans as a learning tool....but that's me...the cost of a new trans is about the same as a pro rebuild...I'd check ebay Harley parts, there is a company in Pa selling 5 & 6 speeds for under $1500. and another selling Ultima 6 speeds with .88 6th gear for under $700.email me and I'll give you the websites...

Re: Main Drive Gear Seal 93 dwg

Well... Already got the primary off, but thanks for the recap.. Seems 5 speeds AND 6 speeds have this 1" diameter seal on the main shaft inside the main drive 5th gear. (After pulley is removed). From what I have read so far, 4 speed sports a different design and is not using a seal in this fashion.

Manual is (edit). Shows how to install a new one with trans on the bench. I guess all the damn gears gotta come out to remove this $2.99 seal. Crap....
The quad seal is an o-ring sits behind spacer which sits behind pulley. Possible leaker when not riding, usually a drip or two...

So. that's my story. thanks for the interesting reading, but I think i'm still unsure. May need to just go the 6 speed. Damn 34 tooth, stock 32, started all this. boo hoo.

Thanks again.
