Re: FXR v FXDX
Two different bikes completely. The FXR had a frame similar in design to the touring models with the "A" gusseting under the seat area and as such was a fantastic frame with little flex unlike the dynas of later years. Too bad they don't make them any longer.

Re: FXR v FXDX
I haven't changed from FXR to FXD, but I've had a '92 FXDC since '93. My buddy had a '93 FXRS(P?). His came with Q.D. windshield & bags,& was called a "convertable". I added same to mine. His bike was quicker handling than mine in curves. Mine seemed a little more stable on straights. His seat height was 1" less than mine, but seat was wider at front. I always liked his a bit better, until I did engine mods. FXR's were more popular, especially for hot rodding. I think the main reason H.D. discontinued them was the cost of assembly, the FXR frame style didn't lend itself to as much automated assembly as the FXD. FXR's used the touring primary set up (short case), and FXD's use softait primarys (long case). Gee, I sorta drifted away from your question didn't I?

Re: FXR v FXDX
My apologies in advance to the senior members who have seen these a dozen times, but I couldn't miss the chance to show off MY "FXR" series stable:
My 1986 FXR Superglide.....as already mentioned, a perfect candidate for mods, this FXR was indeed customized to the point where little remains of it's original factory look, since the entire front end is aftermarket as are the rims, exhaust, seat, and of course the paint, as well as many small items not seen in the pic: ![]() My 1993 FXRS-CON, which did originally have a windshield, which I have but removed because the lexan is scratched, and saddlebags, which are long gone, which is unfortunate, because they are quite rare. The rest of the bike, except for the rims, exhaust, hypercharger, and some chrome replacements, is virtually as it looked when it left the factory, very unusual for these bikes, which because they lended themselves so well to customization are mostly found chopped or otherwise modded, like my '86. ![]() Both of these scoots are so much fun to ride it's hard to get back on the Ultra unless I am going out all day! In fact, I loved the ride of the FXR so much that when I loaned out my '93 to a friend to ride I had to buy another, the '86, so I wouldn't ever be without one! As someone who has owned a LOT of motorcycles over the years, I can honestly say that the FXR is the most "fun" ride I have ever had......not necessarily the most powerful, and certainly not the most comfortable, (That's why God made Ultra-Glides!), but for PURE FUN FACTOR, the FXR wins in my book, and until I owned an FXR I had always previously given that title to the venerable Sporty, my first Harley back in the late 60's, and always my favorite until I graduated to FL's (Shovels in those days), when I was able to afford one. Now, looking back on a lifetime of riding, the old FL's and FLH bikes take a back seat to those early XLCH's I had and definitely the FXR's! Today, these FXR's are the best bang for the buck in the used HD market, IMHO. I'd LOVE to hear the opinion of the other guys on that view! (The bang for the buck in buying an old but well loved FXR.)

Re: FXR v FXDX
I bought my FXRS-SP in april of '86. I lost track of the mileage but it's well over 100K. Have had a dozen other Harleys but I'll ride this till the day I kill myself on it.......I evenn rteplaced the motor so the original would be preserved for when I restore to original condition. Right now it gas a 2002 softtail front end (Wide glide). That move ruined the handling so I'm ready to put the narrow glide and stock wheels back on.

Re: FXR v FXDX
It all depends on the condition of the bike that determines their value. Naturally a bike that has very low miles would bring more than a bike with high miles depending on the condition and what the market will bear.
The suggested retail that is used as a guide is $5625 for that bike.

Re: FXR v FXDX
Had an 85 FXRC, it runs circles around my 2000 FXDL which I lowered 1 1/2" trying to get it to handle as well as the FXR. A good FXR will serve you well.
