Re: Pointers for Kick Starting a New 1997 S&S 100ci
Back in the day (I love saying that) I would push the kick starter down slowly till I got resistance then jump up with the free leg and push all my body weight onto the kick starter while opening the throttle a bit. A small prayer at this time will not hurt. It helps if you have a couple of friends around to offer encouragement and to take turns kicking when you run out of strength. Good Luck!

Re: Pointers for Kick Starting a New 1997 S&S 100ci
Bike on jiffy stand, WITH THE INGNITION OFF, gas on, using left leg, push kicker thru slowly one or 2 times. This primes the motor.
You want to have the kicker at the top of it's throw (or just below it and on compression). You'll feel the resistance. Enrichener on, maybe (this will depend on what motor likes) just crack the throttle (maybe, if the motor likes it, or twist it half way then release it before you kick the motor over to get fuel to the carb, it just depends...). Push the kick down sharply, using left leg (this puts all your body weight on the pedal) and GET OFF THE PEDAL AT THE END OF THE STROKE! Do not keep your foot on it! If you do, it could break your foot, ankle or throw you over the bike if it kickes back! Be sure to take video and post it. I'd love to hear this thing run... Also, be sure to clean the carb, change the gas and all fluids. If it has been sitting for 2 years, you need to go thru it before you attempt to start it. |

What SledDog said pluss kick all the way through to the rachet. never stop partially through the stroke. Depending on the setup the carb may have a tickler on it to prime the engine.

Absolutely! Forgot about not stopping! I learn that one the hard way on an old Panhead. Just goes to show... I haven't used the kicker on the shovelhead in a while... Looks like I be exercising it the next couple of times I ride it.
