Re: what is a chopper to you?

Hobbit's description and Animals pics are "choppers".They have as much weight as possible "chopped" off and still run.Frame mods, gussets cut and a triangle welded in to give it more rake and longer tubes to prop it up,a smaller gas tank(Sporty peanut tank, very popular), no front brakes.etc etc...Whats sells and is being called choppers nowadays are nothing more than custom made billet barges.
I was told a very long time ago how you make a chopper is " Take your stock bike, start it up and start cutting /taking parts off until it stalls....put that last piece back on and yer done!!! LOL

Re: what is a chopper to you?

Yep, you CHOP everything that is unnecessary to get you down the road. There's no such thing as a "modern chopper". If it aint chopped, it aint a chopper.

Re: what is a chopper to you?

Thanks guy's I got to agree. A chopper is a bike that has everything that is not needed to run removed. A low budget operation. Done by you in a garage. Of course the front is racked, the rear is dropped. shocks traded for struts(solid) or the frame modified into a hardtail. Basiclly a creation of your own. Then rode with pride.

Re: what is a chopper to you?

Zoo-man got it right...chopper was style change made with the minimalist attitude...if not necessary remove it or lighten it for performance and personal taste. Making it fancy and paint came later, when bike builders finished with the cutting torch and said why does it have to look "bad" to be good? The latter reversed in translation in modern times!

Re: what is a chopper to you?

To my mind a chopper is a bike that you have "chopped" off all the useless junk and "chopped" the frame up and remade it to suit your personality, or your mood.

Back in the day, it didn't much matter if it was a Harley, a Honda or anything in between. You built it yourself and rode the wheels off it. Today too many times it turns out to be a bike that you paid too much for to ride too little.
