Wheel Balancing
Sticky Thread   No new post Wheel Balancing - 983 days old
From Dunlop Tires It is essential tire/wheel assemblies be balanced before use and rebalanced each time the tire is removed or replaced. Unbalanced tire/wheel assemblies can vibrate at certain speeds, and tire wear will be greatly accelerated. All Dunlop street tires should be installed with the yellow balance dot at the valve.... DOT Brake Fluids
Sticky Thread   No new post DOT Brake Fluids - 873 days old
Some facts about brake fluids. DOT 5 brake fluid is a silicone-based fluid and is not compatible with DOT 4. It is also less suitable than DOT 4 for ABS systems, because of its higher compressibility. DOT 5.1 brake fluid is a low-viscosity, high-temperature fluid compatible with DOT 4 and DOT 3. Its low viscosity makes it... Read more

Brake Squeal
1 Attachment(s) Sticky Thread   No new post Brake Squeal - 983 days old
Curing the annoying disc brake squeal Almost everyone has experienced disc brake squeal at one time or another. What causes this? It's simply a high frequency vibration that creates a harmonic between the caliper body or piston and the back of one or more brake pads (just like vocal cords). It usually occurs often at lower speeds as... Read more

Stopping Distances With ABS
Stopping Distances With ABS - 794 days old
Here's some interesting pages that gives you some input on the stopping distances with ABS brakes and a comparison without them. While they are not Harleys, the results would be similar in results compared to non ABS bikes. http://www.msf-usa.org/imsc/proceedings/a-Green-ComparisonofStoppingDistance.pdf Brakes | National... New Tire Run In
New Tire Run In - 840 days old
Replacements for worn, differently patterned or constructed tires will not react the same. When new tires are fitted, they should not be subjected to maximum power, abrupt lean-over or hard cornering until a reasonable run-in distance of approximately 100 miles has been covered. This will permit the rider to become accustomed to the feel... Read more

Repairing Motorcycle Tires
Repairing Motorcycle Tires - 844 days old
Repaired motorcycle tires should be used only to get you home if need be. They should be changed for safety sake at the earliest possible convenience. Remember on a car, you have 4 tires and a repaired tire there isn't as critical as when you only have two tires, it's not worth gambling on your life to use a repaired tire. Most... Read more

Spoke Tuning
Spoke Tuning - 873 days old
Keeping your Spokes In Tune If you’ve ever heard the term “ Tuning Spokes”, it’s no myth. It’s as simple as tapping a wrench on each individual spoke and listening to the tone it emits. They all should be fairly close, so it you should happen across one that sounds dead, it’s too loose. It one sounds too much higher than the others,... Read more

Disadvantges Of Tire Additives
Disadvantges Of Tire Additives - 968 days old
Don't slime it just yet until you read this. Once upon a time tires were made of rubber - solid rubber. They worked, but they produced a dreadfully hard ride. Then, someone came up with the idea of making them pneumatic (filled with air) and tires became far better as a result, and far more comfortable to ride on. Over the years... Read more

Tire Mounting Precautions
Tire Mounting Precautions - 968 days old
Balance Dots. When a new tire is installed, there will be a painted dot on the sidewall to indicate the lightest spot. This should be aligned with the valve stem which is the heaviest spot and then the wheel should be dynamically balanced. If the tire doesn’t have a balance spot it usually indicates a cheaper tire that should be avoided.... Read more

Tire Inflation Precautions
Tire Inflation Precautions - 968 days old
Do not exceed the maximum tire inflation pressures that are molded into the sidewalls of all tires. This inflation pressure is when the tire is cold not when the bike is being ridden or has just been ridden. In most cases the maximum inflation pressures are not used as regular riding pressures. Air expands with heat generated through... Read more
