Moderating
I have been asked a few times by members what is required and how do you become a moderator . It was suggested that I should make a post to outline what is required.
First and most important, you must have the time to devote to doing the job of a moderator. It takes a lot of time to read through most every post that is posted on the forum daily to scan for problem posts or members and deal appropriately with them if needed. Some days there are anywhere from 300-500 posts in a 24 hour period that need checking. After that is done, a check of the moderators area where only the moderators can access is next on the list and should be done on a regular basis by all mods to see if there is any ongoing issues with members that need to be supervised/PM'd or removed. If nothing is active there, it may be necessary for the moderator to start a new entry if they found a problem of sorts on the forum so the other mods can be aware of it. Any time a member receives an infraction, there's the infraction in a PM that is sent to that member, a permanent record to be made in the users profile of the infraction and the action taken and an entry in the mods room of the actions taken as well. Checking on the new members joining the forum comes into play and they have to be checked for problem spammers and members trying to rejoin that were removed for rules infractions. It's all a matter of record. My job consists of maintaining the self help area and adding new info to that area as well as all of the above duties and working along with the staff if there is a problem with a member also. Some other duties come into play here with the general running of things as well. We try to pick a moderator on their ability to post properly and respectfully with a good attitude and the geographic location can come into play so we have coverage most of the day and night time also. Technical knowledge isn't especially important but helps. Understanding computers is also a plus and how to navigate the forum too. The moderators have many more features than the members do and it takes a while to get use to their locations and how to use them. What it basically comes down to is you have to enjoy doing the moderator job and understand that it does take away from your leisure time on the forum and in your life too. We do not just hand out the moderators title to someone that can't help out as seen in the past. Looking forward, I think we should implement a trial period for any new moderators coming on board to be fair not only to the new entry but to the staff as well as it takes some time to acclimate to the duties and everyone pitches in to help out a new entry. We have many sticky posts in the moderators area that will explain things on the forum that have to be done and they can be referenced at any time by all moderators. We have had a few members that were asked to be moderators but they found out that it isn't as easy as it may appear and declined the position after a short stay as a moderator which is very understandable. It's not for everyone but some people are just naturals at doing it and do an excellent job of moderating and are very fast learners. I have to give credit where credit is due here with "Dr Doolittle" and "The Tank" who were our last two recruits to join the team. I have to say that I have to work hard just to keep up with these two guys. Excellent choices to add to an excellent team of moderators. Thanks to all the moderators of the team that make this forum a great place to be and for an excellent job of doing the moderating. ![]() Thanks guys! glider

Re: Moderating
Aw geez, I forgot all about the explanation of the "POOF" button!
![]() It takes much practice to "POOF" someone but I think I have had enough practice to get it right.

Re: Moderating
Thanks glider. It was a great honor to be asked to be a part of this Team.
It is also therefore an honor to volunteer my time on the best HD forum on the internet. I am very pleased to be working with your great Team of Moderators. They have welcomed me and helped me get over the learning curve of becoming one of them. I am still learning from them. Thanks Guys. I will also add that it is our members that make us such a great forum. We have the cream of the crop when it comes to members. The Tank (the newbie MOD)

I don't know how you were able to get a hold of it Glider, but don't believe nothin' that's in it, I didn't do any of it, the teachers and bosses were out to get me. ![]() Thanks for the outline of the moderators duties, it's nice to know a bit of the inner workings of the forum.
