I have a Browning Hi-power and a S&W M&P 9mm...I love them both...They are great shooters....And, I am a firm believer in a person needs to be comfortable with what he is shooting...not be judged by just "knock down power" If someone junps around because they are afraid of the recoil of the big bores, they will never get comfortable with that gun....
I have a 45 also...and, it does have great stopping power, but...lots of people don't want to shoot a 45 because they are afraid of the recoil and the noise.....
I feel that you should shoot what you are comfortable with, be it a 380 or a 50 cal.
