You said the biggest problem with the 96 engine is it's head. Could the head be ported and polished or are their better heads available and which ones would you recommend. I will be doing the work myself (I have been building racing motors for sports cars for over 30 years). As far as a budget is concerned, I would like to stay under say 3000. I ride about 15000 miles a year so reliability is also a consideration.
Again thanks for your time and great input!!!!

First, another thing I forgot to mention is you need a Clutch upgrade before or as you add cams. TC96s are pushing the limits of a stock clutch with just a tune up. When you start building torque in these lead sleds we ride the clutch becomes a liability. Harley's SE clutch spring will hold 100 ft of torque beyond that level and you need a Barnett Scorpion or similar clutch.
Porting stock heads and installing bigger valves is a much better "Bang for the Buck" than aftermarket heads. Mill the heads for a 9.8/1 -10/1 CR , 1.90" intake and a 1.54" exhaust valves made of SS by any of the top names and a spring pack to match the cam of your choice.
Not much HP or torque to gained by porting with the tiny stock valves! Easy doable for $750 and now you can make some power!
If your going to work the heads it opens a whole different world as far as cams are concerned.
I would step up to Gear drive cams and go with a Andrews part #
216337G, Cam 37HG .510 lift and 272 ID - 276 ED.
With 96ci to work with this cam will still be very street friendly! With the ported heads your looking at 110-115HP and 120-125 ft of torque on 91-93 octane pump gas.
Still use the SE adj. push-rods. Forget about upgrading the stock clutch and replace it with a Barnett!
That's about all a stock bottom end will live with!
